Winter at WBCC:
Preparing the Course and Embracing the Holiday Season
The holiday season is here, and with it comes colder weather and the official end of another golf season at WBCC. While it is always bittersweet to see the golf course transition into dormancy, the holiday season also brings time to reflect, celebrate with family and friends, and get to work behind the scenes to prepare for next year.
Wrapping Up Course Work
As exciting as the holidays are, winter’s arrival makes it increasingly difficult to complete course projects. That said, we are still hopeful for a stretch of cooperative weather to tackle a few of our Fall projects. We a hoping to do a little bunker edge and surround sodding work, aerification of surrounds as well as some tree removal. Our Tree removal focus remains on diseased, damaged, nonnative trees, which are all trees that are in line with our Tree Management Standard as well as trees that are in line with the Course Master Plan.
All trees are rated on a priority scale of one to three. The current list are those trees that have a priority rating of a one. The plan, if mother nature allows, is to remove these trees during the rest of the fall and into early winter. If the weather does not cooperate, we will finish the remaining trees on the list next spring when conditions allow for equipment to traverse the course once again.
Winter Turf Watch
As we wait for the ground to freeze and the turf to enter full dormancy, colder temperatures play a key role. A dormant plant is better equipped to manage winter rains, melting events, and other weather fluctuations, thus helping to protect its health throughout the winter.
This time of year is also a unique opportunity for collaboration. Our ongoing research with the University of Minnesota and Wisconsin continues to deepen our understanding of winter turf dynamics, helping us protect and enhance the course. If you are out exploring the property, we ask for your help in preserving research areas like the 9th, 11th, and 12th green and its surroundings.
Winter Wonderland at WBCC
Even though the fairways are resting, there is still plenty to enjoy on the course this winter. When snow blankets WBCC, we transform into a winter wonderland with groomed cross-country ski trails and snowshoe paths for members to enjoy.
A few reminders for winter trail use:
- Please stay on designated paths and avoid greens, tees, and fairways to protect them.
- Skiers, enjoy the groomed trails. (When there is enough snow to groom)
- Snowshoers, stick to the edges of the ski trails to help maintain their condition.
These trails are a wonderful way to experience WBCC in a different season, and we hope you will take advantage of the peaceful beauty they offer.
A Warm Holiday Greeting
As winter’s frosty embrace settles over WBCC, my team and I extend our heartfelt holiday wishes to you and your family. May your celebrations be filled with warmth, joy, and cherished moments.
While we look forward to the return of spring, let us take time to appreciate the serene beauty of winter. From all of us in Grounds and Greens, we wish you a joyous holiday season and look forward to welcoming you back to the course when the warmth of spring returns.
